Luncheon on the Houthis of Yemen and the Threat They Pose (San Antonio)

Participate in a luncheon discussion on the Houthis of Yemen and the threat they pose in the region and world. The Houthis of Yemen, once a minor Iran-backed militia, have emerged since the attacks of October 7 as a major force within Tehran’s “axis of resistance” due to their drone and missile attacks on ships in the Red Sea, their alliances with al-Shabaab and other jihadis, and their arms deals with Russia.  Former United Kingdom Ambassador to Yemen Edmund Fitton-Brown will address this transformation, what enabled it, as well as how their rise to power affects regional dynamics while also discussing how the west can best counter them.

Speaker Background
Ambassador Edmund Fitton-Brown worked in the British foreign service from 1984 until 2017, culminating as UK Ambassador for Yemen in 2015-17. He then joined the Analytical Support and Sanctions Monitoring Team of the United Nations Security Council and coordinated their threat assessment and sanctions work from 2018 to 2022. He now works as a consultant in Austin, Texas, specializing in counterterrorism, counter-extremism, national and international security, and geostrategic issues in the Middle East, North Africa and South-Central Asia.
