Admiral Winnefeld graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology with a degree in Aerospace Engineering and served in the United States Navy. He flew the F-14 Tomcat, instructed at the Navy Fighter Weapons School, also known as TOPGUN, and served as senior aide-de-camp to General Colin L. Powell. He subsequently commanded a fighter squadron, the amphibious ship USS CLEVELAND, and the aircraft carrier USS ENTERPRISE. As a flag officer, he commanded a carrier strike group, the United States SIXTH Fleet, NATO Joint Command Lisbon, Striking and Support Forces NATO, United States NORTHERN Command, and the North American Aerospace Defense Command. He retired in 2015 after serving as the ninth Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Admiral Winnefeld is a former chair of the President’s Intelligence Advisory Board. He co-founded Rule 1 Ventures Fund 2, a defense technology venture capital fund, and is a director or advisory board member for a host of public and private companies operating in a broad spectrum of business sectors.
He is a Distinguished Professor at the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs at Georgia Tech, where he is also a member of the Engineering Hall of Fame, and is a senior non-resident fellow at Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government.
Admiral Winnefeld and his wife Mary co-founded SAFEProject.US, a national nonprofit dedicated to helping prevent drug overdose fatalities in the United States. He is a frequently published author, co-host of the podcast “The Adrenaline Zone” and the Substack “Gray and Gritty,” and the author of Sailing Upwind: Leadership and Risk from TopGun to the Situation Room.
