A skilled and agile workforce is the backbone of national security, yet the Department of Defense (DoD) and the broader national security community face mounting challenges in maintaining and developing this critical asset. Recruitment has become increasingly difficult in a competitive labor market, particularly as fewer young Americans meet eligibility requirements or show interest in military or defense careers. Retention is equally pressing, as government agencies struggle to keep talent amidst more lucrative opportunities in the private sector. Additionally, achieving diversity and inclusion remains a significant hurdle, with the need to reflect the diverse perspectives and skills of the population to address complex global threats effectively.
Since 2014, BENS members have brought invaluable private sector insights to help government partners address these pressing issues. Drawing from their expertise in talent management, organizational efficiency, and workforce development, they have offered strategies to enhance recruitment pipelines, improve employee retention, and foster a more inclusive workplace culture. The private sector’s ability to identify emerging trends in workforce dynamics, develop cutting-edge training programs, and implement scalable solutions positions it as a key partner in building a robust national security workforce. By bridging the gap between public and private sector practices, BENS members help ensure that the DoD and its partners can attract and retain the skilled personnel necessary to safeguard national security in an ever-changing world.
