Strengthening Supply Chains

America’s supply chains are optimized for efficiency, not resilience. There is now bipartisan consensus that America is overexposed to supply chain disruption – whether caused by geopolitical instability or natural events. Too much of what is important to the U.S economy and defense capability is controlled by countries that America may not be able to depend on in times of need. While the government is responding to this need to change, most of the supply chains are private sector owned and operated and driven by incentives that defy quick fixes. This BENS campaign focuses on identifying the actions required to strengthen U.S. and allied ability to increase supply capacity, and to support and encourage public-private efforts in support of supply chain actions. Initially our work is focused on four target four sectors: Critical Minerals – the raw inputs for nearly every modern technology; Semiconductors – dependent on both rare materials and precision equipment; Biotechnology – raising awareness on the increasing role of biotechnology in everyday life and the fragility of overseas sources for U.S. pharmaceuticals; and Energy Systems – ensuring infrastructure and resiliency to meet every increasing demand.
