Mark S. Newman was the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of DRS Technologies, Inc. He joined the Company in 1973, four years after its founding. After serving many years as the company’s Chief Financial Officer, he became President and CEO in 1994, and was elected Chairman of the Board in 1995. Mr. Newman retired from DRS in January 2012.
Under Mr. Newman’s leadership, DRS became an established market leader on several of the most important 21st century military platforms and held key positions in the markets it served. Under his leadership, the company grew from a small specialty electronics supplier to a highly diversified defense technology provider with over 10,500 employees. In 2008 DRS became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Finmeccanica SpA, a global leader in the aerospace, defense, and security industries.
Mr. Newman is active with many important professional organizations, including Business Executives for National Security (BENS), where he serves as a member of the board of directors. He has also served as a director of the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation (CMOHF) and is a past chairman of the American Electronics Association (AeA). He has been a key supporter of the Association of the United States Army (AUSA) for over 20 years, and is a member of the Navy League, NDIA, and Surface Navy Association. He is also a director on the boards of American Biltrite, Inc., ISO Group and Mercury Systems, Inc.
Mr. Newman has received numerous awards and honors. In recognition of his dedicated service to America’s military and as an esteemed and highly regarded member of the defense-industry community, the Association of the United States Army presented him the John W. Dixon Award. He received the RADM John J. Bergen Industry Award presented by the Navy League of the United States; the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation Semper Fidelis Award; the Dwight D. and Mamie Eisenhower Distinguished Citizen Award, presented by the Army Distaff Foundation; and the John H. Martinson Technology Supporter Award, presented by The New Jersey Technology Council. Others honors include induction into the New Jersey High-Tech Hall of Fame and the Tri-County Scholarship Fund Hall of Fame. He is also a past winner of the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award.
Mr. Newman is married and has four grown children. His interests include golf, skiing, auto racing, and history.
