Peter Crail

Senior Policy Director

Peter Crail has spent over two decades working at the intersection of national security, technology, and industry, holding positions in government, at the United Nations, and in the nonprofit sector before joining the BENS policy team in 2019. At BENS, he’s focused on leveraging and protecting technology for national security purposes, critical supply chains, and critical infrastructure.

Prior to joining BENS, Peter served as the Chair of the Nonproliferation Innovation Committee, an inter-lab study group run by the National Nuclear Security Administration’s Arms Control Office whose work focused on nuclear nonproliferation and strategic trade controls.

Before working for NNSA, he spent five years as a nonproliferation adviser in the Office of the Undersecretary of State for Arms Control and International Security, focused on efforts to monitor, constrain, and roll back the WMD and missile programs of Iran, North Korea, and Syria. He was part of the interagency team responsible for the removal of Syria’s chemical weapons and precursors, a member of the U.S. delegation to various multilateral arms control conferences, and served as the U.S. coordinator for senior bilateral strategic dialogues with Japan, India, and South Korea.

Prior to his government service, Peter worked on strategic technology controls and nonproliferation at Washington, D.C. think tanks and the United Nations. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Anthropology from the University of California, Berkeley, and a Master’s degree in International Policy Studies from the Monterey Institute of International Studies.
